Sitting in the heart of Houston, Texas is the National Sport Karate Museum. The museum’s mission is to “ educate the public about the history and evolution of the sport of karate through its collections, exhibitions, and programming.” It contains the largest collection of karate artifacts and memorabilia in the world with over 5,000 items on display.
The History of the National Sport Karate Museum
The National Sport Karate Museum is located in Houston, Texas and traces its roots back to the late 1970s when a group of karate enthusiasts decided to formalize the sport by creating a national governing body. The board of directors for this new organization, known as the United States Karate Association (USKA), included some of the biggest names in karate at the time, such as Chuck Norris, Joe Lewis, and Bill Wallace. In addition to promoting karate competitions and clinics, the USKA also began collecting historical artifacts related to the sport.
The USKA’s collection of karate memorabilia eventually outgrew its small office space, so in 1982 the organization leased a large warehouse in order to have enough room to house its growing collection. The warehouse became known as the National Sport Karate Museum, and it quickly became a popular destination for karate fans from all over the world. In 1991, the museum was relocated to a larger facility in Houston, where it remains today.

The National Sport Karate Museum is a 501 (c) (3), non-profit educational institution, dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of the history of sport karate. The Museum is located in Houston, Texas and houses the largest collection of sport karate memorabilia in the world.
The Museum’s collections include trophies, belts, photos, tournament posters, magazines, films, and other artifacts documenting the history of sport karate from its beginnings in the late 1960s to the present day. The Museum also has a library of books and magazines on martial arts and related subjects.
The National Sport Karate Museum is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Admission is free for Members and $5 for non-Members.
The Future of the National Sport Karate Museum
The National Sport Karate Museum in Houston, Texas is set to become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the city. The museum is currently undergoing a $5 million expansion that will add a state-of-the-art sports facility, a retail store, and a coffee shop. The expansion is set to be completed by 2020.
The Plans for the National Sport Karate Museum

The National Sport Karate Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free for children under 12, $5 for adults, and $3 for seniors and students.
The Funding for the National Sport Karate Museum
The National Sport Karate Museum in Houston Texas is a 501c3 non-profit museum dedicated to the history and preservation of the American martial art of Sport Karate. The NSKM was founded in 2013 bySensei Joseph S.annis, a 9th degree black belt and former World Champion.
The NSKM is the only museum of its kind in America, and is currently housed in a small facility with limited public hours. The museum is 100% volunteer run and funded entirely by donations.
In order to continue its mission of preserving the history of Sport Karate, the NSKM is currently working to raise funds to move to a larger facility with more public access. The new facility will have space for exhibits, a library, and events, as well as office space for the museum staff.
The NSKM is working with donors, grantors, and sponsors to raise the funds needed for this move. With your help, we can ensure that the history of Sport Karate is preserved for future generations.
