When Are Texas Competitive Select Sport Seasons?

Texas Competitive Select Sport Seasons are determined by the number of teams registered in each sport.
The earlier you register, the better your chances are of getting your first choice of sport, division, and schedule.

Introduction

In the state of Texas, there are three competitive select sport seasons. The first season is the fall, which runs from August 1st through October 31st. The second season is the winter, which runs from November 1st through February 28th. The third and final season is the spring, which runs from March 1st through May 31st.

Fall Season

The Fall season for high school Competitive Select sports is from early August to late October/early November, with tryouts in late July/early August. For the complete list ofFall sports offered, check the TAPPS website.

The first practices for allFall sports other than cross country and football may begin on Monday, August 3, 2020. The first permissible date for cross country and football practices is Monday, August 10, 2020. The first permissible date for volleyball scrimmages and games is Saturday, August 15, 2020. Other Fall sport schedules will be released at a later date.

In order to promote student-athlete safety and limit exposure to COVID-19 during the pre-season period, TAPPS has adopted the following guidelines:
-All student-athletes must wear a face covering when participating in any kind of workouts, practice or meeting when social distancing of six feet or more cannot be maintained;
-All coaches must wear a face covering during any kind of workouts, practice or meeting when social distancing of six feet or more cannot be maintained;
-All workouts must be conducted outdoors whenever possible;
-When indoors, proper ventilation must be utilized;
-activities should be limited to small groups whenever possible and groups should not exceed 50 people at one time;
-Locker rooms should not be used for changing clothes – student-athletes should come to practice dressed and ready to participate;
-Showers should not be used after workouts.

Winter Season

The winter season runs from early November to late February. Football, volleyball, and cross country are played in the fall, while basketball, track and field, and powerlifting are played in the winter.

Spring Season

Spring season sports are offered from February-May.

Summer Season

In the state of Texas, the summer competitive select sport season generally runs from early May to late June or early July. The start and end dates may vary slightly depending on the particular sport and the region of the state in which the league is located. For example, in Central Texas, the baseball season typically starts a little earlier than in other parts of the state and may run into early July.
