History
The Texas Longhorns are the athletic teams that represent the University of Texas at Austin. The teams are sometimes referred to as “the Horns” and take their name from Longhorn cattle that were an important part of the state’s history. The women’s teams are sometimes called the Lady Longhorns, but generally both men’s and women’s teams are referred to as the Longhorns.

Today, the Longhorns compete in fourteen sports – baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, gymnastics, rowing, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field (indoor and outdoor), and volleyball. The Longhorns are members of the Big 12 Conference and have won more than one hundred national championships.

History

Basketball
History
Basketball was originally played with a soccer ball. The first balls made specifically for basketball were brown, and it was only after the introduction of the orange ball in 1909 that basketball became the game we know it as today.
The game was created by Dr. James Naismith in 1891 to keep his young charges at the YMCA manifesting Christian values during the cold winter months. He nailed a peach basket to either end of his gymnasium and devised 13 rules to keep the game fair and simple.
Basketball quickly became popular on college campuses and among inner-city youths. In 1936, the game we now call “basketball” was officially included in the Olympic Games, and has been a mainstay of the Olympics ever since. Professional basketball took off in 1946 with the establishment of the Basketball Association of America, which eventually merged with the National Basketball League to become today’s NBA.

The Texas Longhorns men’s basketball team represents The University of Texas at Austin in NCAA Division I intercollegiate men’s basketball. The Longhorns compete in the Big 12 Conference. As of 2020, Texas ranks second in all-time wins in NCAA Division I history with 2,463 wins and one national championship (1963). Since 1977, the team has played its home games in the Frank Erwin Special Events Center, which is located on the campus of the university.
Rivalries
The Longhorns have many rivals in all sports. In football, their traditional rivals are the Oklahoma Sooners and the Nebraska Cornhuskers; Texas has played both annually since 1900, except for a break in the series between 1910 and 1915. The Longhorns also have rivalries with the Oklahoma State Cowboys and the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
In men’s basketball, their chief rivals are the Kansas Jayhawks, whom they play annually as a part of the Big 12 Conference schedule; both schools also compete annually in football and baseball. Other rivals include Baylor, TCU, SMU, and Rice.

History
Baseball is a bat-and-ball game played between two opposing teams who take turns batting and fielding. The game proceeds when a player on the fielding team, called the pitcher, throws a ball which a player on the batting team tries to hit with a bat. The objective of the offensive team is to hit the ball into the field of play, allowing its players to run the bases, having them advance counter-clockwise around four bases to score what are called “runs”. The objective of the defensive team is to prevent batters from becoming runners, and to prevent runners’ advance around the bases. A run is scored when a runner legally advances around the bases in order and touches home plate (the fourth base). The team that scores the most runs by the end of the game is the winner.

The Longhorns have won 27 total conference championships in four different conferences. The Longhorns have won the most Southwest Conference titles with 20 and the most Big 12 Conference titles with 9.
Rivalries
The Texas Longhorns baseball team has intense rivalries with the Oklahoma Sooners, the Baylor Bears, and the Texas A&M Aggies. These rivalries are so strong that they even have a name – the Red River Rivalry. The games between these teams are some of the most watched college baseball games every year.
