Then, in 1923, they designated “The Yellow Rose of Texas” as an additional state flower.

In response to all this activity—and perhaps sensing that they needed to get in on the action—members of the legislature finally took up bills proposed by the DRT recognizing pecans and mockingbirds as official state symbols. On March 15, 1923—exactly 100 years after Stephen F. Austin first brought 300 pecan trees to what is now Austin—the legislature made pecans not only Texas’ official nut but also its official horticultural plant. And on May 11 of that year lawmakers followed suit with respect to mockingbirds, making them both Texas’ official bird and its official game bird.
