Archery

Archery is the sport, practice or skill of using a bow to shoot arrows. The word comes from the Latin arcus. Historically, archery has been used for hunting and combat. In modern times, it is mainly a competitive sport and recreational activity. A person who participates in archery is typically called an archer or a bowman, and one who is fond of or an expert at archery can be referred to as a toxophilite.

The governing body of international amateur archery is the International Archery Federation (FITA), which operates under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). FITA was founded in 1931 and has 156 member nations. It is based in Lausanne, Switzerland.[1] Archery is also regulated by national bodies such as USA Archery and Archery GB (the former National Society for Equal Opportunities in Sport).[2][3]

The earliest evidence for stone-tipped spears comes from Africa during the Solutrean period,[4] about 19,000 years ago.[5] Bows eventually replaced spears because they allow more precise control of projectiles while using less energy.[citation needed] Archery became increasingly important during the Bronze Age, when most people lived in small villages with little military training; effective ranged weapons were needed to defend against marauding bands of raiders.[6][7] Arrows were especially destructive against unarmored bodies – particularly those composed mostly of soft tissues such as exposed flesh or vulnerable organs – which made them effective against lightly-armored infantry (such as nomadic tribesmen) but far less lethal against most cavalrymen wearing chainmail or plate armor.[8]

Badminton

Badminton is a racquet sport played using racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net. Although it may be played with larger teams, the most common forms of the game are “singles” (with one player per side) and “doubles” (with two players per side). Badminton is often played as a casual outdoor activity in a garden or backyard. Games are also commonly played indoors in gyms, while professional tournaments are held in stadiums with thousands of seats.

Baseball

The Summer Olympics are an international sporting event that takes place every four years. The games are composed of a variety of different sports, each with their own set of rules and regulations. One of the sports that is played in the Summer Olympics is baseball.

Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport that is played on a field between two teams of nine players each. The objective of the game is to score runs by hitting a ball and then running around a series of bases laid out in a diamond pattern. The team with the most runs at the end of the game wins.

Basketball

Basketball was first included in the Summer Olympics in 1936. The sport is now played by men and women from all over the world. In the Olympics, there are two different competitions for basketball: one for men and one for women. Each team consists of twelve players.

Basketball is a very popular sport, and it is one of the few that is played indoors. It is usually played on a hardwood court, but it can also be played on grass or concrete. The court is divided into two halves, and each team has a basket at each end of the court. The object of the game is to score points by shooting the ball into the other team’s basket.

Boxing

Boxing is a sport in which two opponents of similar weight fight each other with their fists. The goal is to score points by landing punches on the other fighter, and the winner is the one who scores the most points.

Canoeing

Canoeing was first introduced as an Olympic sport in 1936, and has been a part of every Summer Olympics since then. There are two main types of canoeing events in the Olympics: sprint and slalom. Sprint canoeing involves racing on a straight course, while slalom canoeing features racing through a course with gates that must be navigated. Canoeing is a popular sport around the world, with many Canoeing federations present in different countries.

Cycling

There are several different types of cycling events in the Summer Olympics, including road racing, track racing, BMX, and mountain biking.

Road racing is a mass-start event held on a course that is typically between 25-30 miles long. The course may include both paved and unpaved sections, and may also include hills or other changes in terrain. The race is typically completed in 2-3 hours.

Track cycling is held on a specially-designed oval track, with races ranging from sprints (which can be over in less than a minute) to longer endurance events. BMX racing is also held on an oval track, but the track is shorter and includes obstacles such as jumps and berms; racers must complete laps in under 45 seconds.

Mountain biking debuted as an Olympic sport in 1996, and has been included in every Summer Olympics since then. The race is held on a cross-country course that includes both paved and unpaved sections, as well as uphill and downhill sections; racers must complete the course in under 2 hours.

Diving

The sport of diving includes four competitive events: 1m and 3m springboards, and 10m platform. In all cases, seven judges score each dive on a scale from 0 to 10 with 0.5 point increments. The highest and lowest scores are dropped and the remaining five are averaged to determine the divers’ score for that particular dive.

Both men and women compete in diving at the Summer Olympics. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, there will be eight events (four each for men and women): 3m springboard, 10m platform, synchronised 3m springboard, and synchronised 10m platform.

Equestrian

Equestrian sports were first included in the modern Olympic Games in 1900. There are now three equestrian disciplines represented in the Summer Olympics: dressage, eventing, and show jumping. Equestrian events are held in an arena with obstacles, and the aim is for the horse and rider to complete the course without incurring penalties.

Dressage is often described as “horse ballet” due to its elegance and precision. Eventing is a more demanding discipline that includes dressage, show jumping, and cross-country components. Show jumping is the only equestrian discipline that does not require previous training in dressage or eventing; however, it is still a technical sport with stringent rules.

Fencing

The Summer Olympics are held every four years, and feature a variety of different sports. One of the sports contested at the Summer Olympics is fencing.

Fencing is a sport that has been around for centuries, and was even featured in the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Fencing is a combat sport in which two opponents face each other with swords. There are three different types of swords used in fencing: the foil, the epee, and the sabre. Each type of sword has different rules associated with it.

Fencers score points by landing hits on their opponents with their swords. The winner of a fencing match is the fencer who scores the most points.
