AAU was founded in 1888 to establish standards and uniformity in amateur sports. AAU is one of the largest, non-profit volunteer, sports organizations in the world. membership includes athletes, coaches, officials, and parents. The AAU is divided into 43 districts throughout the continental United States and Alaska. Each district is made up of several AAU member clubs.

Amateur Athletic Union’s (AAU’s) goal is “to create and maintain the broadest based competitive youth sports program in the world, while serving and educating participants and their families.” Founded in 1888, AAU several years ago had as many as 650,000 members nationwide in 38 sports. Now the number has dropped to about 500,000 participants in 30 sports.
