What is Sport Management?

The field of sport management encompasses a wide range of activities and organizations, all focused on the business of sport. From professional and amateur athletics to corporate fitness programs and Special Olympics, sport managers plan, organize, direct, and coordinate the resources and personnel needed to successfully run a sports organization.

A career in sport management can be both exciting and challenging, with opportunities to work in a variety of settings including professional and collegiate sports teams, sporting goods companies, fitness centers, event management firms, and more.

If you are interested in a career in sport management, the first step is to earn a degree from an accredited college or university. A bachelor’s degree in sport management or a related field is typically required for entry-level positions, with many employers preferring candidates with a master’s degree or higher. Once you have earned your degree, there are a number of professional certification programs available that can help you further your career.
