The team was founded by James Garner, who also owned and operated a chain of auto dealerships in the Dallas–Fort Worth area. The team’s first head coach was Abe Lemons, who had coached at Oklahoma City University and the University of Texas. Lemons was replaced after one season by Hank Iba, who had coached at Oklahoma State University and West Virginia University. Iba coached the team for four seasons before being replaced by Bob Bass, who would go on to coach the team for five seasons.

The Flyers were one of the ABA’s most successful teams, winning division titles in 1969-70, 1970-71, 1971-72, 1972-73, 1973-74, and 1974-75.
