The Legends began play as the Tulsa 66ers in Oklahoma in 2005. They relocated to Frisco in 2010 and were subsequently purchased by Nelson. In Frisco, the team won division titles in 2014 and 2015. The Legends made the playoffs five out of six seasons between 2011 and 2016. Despite their recent success on the court, however, attendance has lagged behind capacity at Dr Pepper Arena; per season ticket holder Scott Bellamy in early 2017, “there’s just not a lot of awareness” about the team among DFW-area residents.
Fort Worth Flyers
The Fort Worth Flyers were a professional basketball team in Fort Worth, Texas, from 1961 to 1975. The Flyers were members of the American Basketball Association (ABA) for nine seasons, from 1967 to 1976. They played their home games at the Tarrant County Convention Center.
The team was founded by James Garner, who also owned and operated a chain of auto dealerships in the Dallas–Fort Worth area. The team’s first head coach was Abe Lemons, who had coached at Oklahoma City University and the University of Texas. Lemons was replaced after one season by Hank Iba, who had coached at Oklahoma State University and West Virginia University. Iba coached the team for four seasons before being replaced by Bob Bass, who would go on to coach the team for five seasons.
The Flyers were one of the ABA’s most successful teams, winning division titles in 1969-70, 1970-71, 1971-72, 1972-73, 1973-74, and 1974-75. They also won the ABA’s championship in 1971-72, defeating the Indiana Pacers in seven games. The team disbanded when the ABA merged with the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1976.
