Definition

A Sport Club is a student-run organization that promotes interest, develops proficiency, and provides continual opportunity for competition in a particular sport. Students of all skill levels are encouraged to join. Joining a club is a great way to make friends, relieve stress, and stay in shape!

Most clubs compete against other colleges and universities in the state, region, or nation in either intramural or intercollegiate leagues. Each club is responsible for its own finances, membership dues, equipment, and coaching; however, the Department of Recreational Sports provides each club with designated practice times and access to recreation facilities. Participation in clubs often looks great on resumes and applications for graduate school and jobs because it demonstrates leadership skills, time management abilities, and commitment.

History

The first Sport Clubs were founded in the late 1960’s. The clubs were developed to provide opportunities for students to participate in competitive, recreational and instructional activities outside of the traditional varsity sports program. As student interest grew, so did the number of clubs. In 1981, the Division of Student Affairs took over the governance and support of the clubs program. In 1989, a full-time Club Sports Coordinator was hired, and the Sport Clubs office was officially established within the Department of Recreational Sports.

Since that time, the Club Sports program has continued to grow and now includes over 60 clubs representing a variety of sporting interests. The clubs are organized and operated by student leaders with guidance from professional staff. Participation is open to all currently enrolled Texas A&M University students who meet eligibility requirements and pay quarterly club dues.
