Even though the team has had some down years lately, they remain one of the top programs in the nation.
History
The first organized game of college football took place on November 6, 1869 when Rutgers University faced off against Princeton University.
Early History
Texas A&M Aggies football began in 1876 with the first game being played against Baylor. The team played as an independent school until they became a charter member of the Southwest Conference in 1915. The Southwest Conference dissolved in 1996, and Texas A&M became a charter member of the Big 12 Conference the following year.
Recent History
The Texas A&M football program represents Texas A&M University in the sport of American football. The Aggies compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Mike Sherman was fired on December 1, 2011, and Kevin Sumlin was hired as head football coach on December 10, 2011. In 2018, Jimbo Fisher took over as head coach. The team plays its home games at Kyle Field, an 82,589-person capacity outdoor stadium on the university’s campus in College Station, Texas.
Texas A&M has produced two Heisman Trophy winners: John David Crow in 1957 and Earl Campbell in 1977. As of the end of the 2016 season, the Aggies have won three national championships (1939, 1941 and 1949), 26 conference championships (including 13 SEC titles), eight divisional championships and nine perfect seasons. They have also set numerous NCAA records

The 12th Man tradition began at Texas A&M in 1922 when coach Dana X. Bible called for students to stand during the entire game to show their support for the team. Today, the 12th Man is still an important part of Texas A&M football. On game days, the student section is filled with over 20,000 fans cheering on the Aggies.
Aggie Football Traditions
Aggie football fans are some of the most passionate in the country. Every home game, tens of thousands of Aggie fans fill Kyle Field to watch their team take on opponents. And while many college football programs have traditions, few can match the unique culture and pageantry of Texas A&M Football.
Before every home game, Aggie fans gather around Kyle Field to participate in the world-famous “Midnight Yell.” This loud and spirited pep rally gets students and fans ready for the big game, and it’s a great opportunity to show off your Aggie Spirit.
If you’re lucky enough to attend an away game, you’ll see Aggie fans wearing their traditional maroon and white colors. And no matter where the game is being played, you can be sure to hear Aggie fans singing the “Spirit of Aggieland” throughout the stadium.
