The team was founded during the 1967 NHL expansion as the Minnesota North Stars, based in Bloomington, Minnesota. Before the beginning of the 1978–79 NHL season, the team merged with the Cleveland Barons after the league granted them permission due to each having filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Ultimately, both franchises were consolidated into a single team under new ownership and relocated to Dallas for the start of the 1993–94 NHL season. The Stars played out of Reunion Arena from their relocation until 2001. Before the beginning of the 1978–79 NHL season, the team merged with the Cleveland Barons after the league granted them permission due to each team having only seven players on their rosters. Ultimately, Minnesota’s roster was merged with Cleveland’s and split between Dallas and relocated Boston Bruins as part of a pre-arranged deal that saw Dallas receive hired gun Rick Dudley and $1 million while Boston received future considerations in return (which later turned into a 1982 second round draft pick used to draft blueliner Tom Kurvers).
The Stars have won eight division championships (most recently in 2020), two Presidents’ Trophies as the top regular season team in the league (1998–99 and 1999–2000), two Western Conference championships (1998–99 and 1999–2000), and one Stanley Cup championship (1999). As a result of their Stanley Cup win in 1999, they are one of only three franchises – along with the New Jersey Devils and Colorado Avalanche – to have winning seasons every year since 1995.
