Eligibility Requirements

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required in order to be eligible to pursue a masters degree in Sport Management at Texas A&M University. To be eligible for admission to a masters program in Sport Management at Texas A&M, applicants must meet the following criteria:

To be eligible for admission to the Master of Science degree program in Sport Management, applicants must:
• hold a four-year bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution;
• have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale; and
• meet the general admission requirements of the Graduate School; and
• submit official transcripts, three letters of recommendation, resume and a goals statement.

All applicants must also satisfactorily complete an interview with the Graduate Studies Committee. International applicants whose first language is not English must also submit a satisfactory score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

Application Process

To be considered for admission into the Master of Science in Sport Management program at Texas A&M, applicants must submit the following: a completed online application including the non-refundable $75 application fee, official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, a current resume, a goal statement

Application Fee

A separate non-refundable $75 application fee must be submitted with your online application. If you are submitting an application for multiple individuals, each individual will be required to submit a separate non-refundable $75 application fee.


To be eligible for admission into the Master’s degree program in Sport Management, applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. If you have not yet completed your undergraduate degree, you must submit an official transcript showing all coursework completed to date and your current GPA.

All applicants must also submit official transcripts from each college or university attended, whether or not credit was earned, and whether or not the coursework is reflected on another transcript. Unofficial transcripts may be uploaded to the online application for evaluation purposes only; however, official transcripts will be required if an offer of admission is extended. Please do not mail your transcripts to our office unless specifically requested to do so by our staff.

If you are currently enrolled in coursework towards your bachelor’s degree, please include a letter from your Registrar’s Office on official letterhead certifying that you will complete all requirements for the degree prior to enrolling in graduate courses at Texas A&M University. The letter should list all courses in progress and those yet to be completed, as well as your expected date of graduation. Letters of Recommendation

When applying to Texas A&M for a Master’s degree in Sport Management, two letters of recommendation are required. The first letter should come from a direct supervisor. The second letter may come from another individual within the applicant’s profession, or from a professor familiar with the applicant’s academic work. All letters should be placed on official letterhead, signed by the author, and submitted in a sealed envelope. Letters should be addressed to:

Statement of Purpose

When applying to the Master of Science in Sport Management program at Texas A&M University, all applicants must submit a Statement of Purpose. This statement should be approximately 500 words in length and should discuss your previous experience in the sport industry, your reasons for wanting to pursue a master’s degree, your long-term career goals and how you plan to use your degree to achieve those goals.

Degree Requirements

The MS in Sport Management program at Texas A&M requires that students complete a total of 36 credit hours of coursework, which is broken down into 27 credits of required coursework and 9 credits of electives. The required courses cover topics such as sport finance, sport marketing, and sport law. Students can choose from a variety of electives to complete their degree, such as courses in sport psychology, facility management, and event management.


To be awarded the Master of Science in Sport Management, students must earn 36 hours of graduate credit. All students must completeSMGT 681 – Internship/Practicum andSMGT 682 – Capstone in Sport Management, resulting in a total of 36 hours. Up to six (6) hours of internship credit may be transferred from another institution if the internship was completed within five (5) years prior to enrollment at Texas A&M University and if the student’s advisor and the Department Head approve.


An internship is required for all students pursuing the MS in Sport Management. The internship provides students with the opportunity to gain practical experience in the sport management industry. Internships are typically completed during the summer between the first and second year of study, but arrangements can be made to complete the internship during the academic year. Students must complete at least 400 hours of work at their internship site.

Capstone Project

All students must successfully complete a capstone project in order to graduate. The capstone project is an opportunity for you to synthesize and apply the knowledge and skills you have acquired throughout your coursework in a real-world setting. working with a faculty advisor, you will identify a topic area of interest, conduct literature review, collect and analyze data, and prepare and present a report on your findings.


TAMU offers a M.S. in Sport Management with three concentrations: Human Resource Development in Sport, Intercollegiate Sport Administration, and International Sport Business. All three concentrations require the completion of core coursework, a research project/thesis, and an internship.

Athletic Administration

The online Master of Science in Sport Management is tailored for working professionals and delivered 100% online. The degree requires 33 hours of graduate coursework, which can be completed in as few as 21 months. Athletic administration coursework focuses on the business side of sport and prepares students for careers in collegiate and professional sport organizations

Business of Sport

The Business of Sport concentration is designed to prepare students for careers in the business aspects of sport organizations. Concentration coursework emphasizes sport marketing, finance, event and facility management, law, and ethics. In addition to the required Business of Sport coursework, students complete a 3-hour internship and a 3-hour practicum in the sport industry.

Event Management

Event management is the process of planning, organizing, and executing events such as conferences, meetings, concerts, conventions, and weddings. Event managers work with a variety of people, includingevent planners, catering staff, venue staff, vendors, and volunteers. They are responsible for ensuring that all aspects of the event are running smoothly and on schedule.

There are many different types of events that event managers can specialize in, such as corporate events, social events, or sporting events. Corporate events may include conferences, conventions, product launches, or company parties. Social events may include weddings, anniversaries, birthday parties, or bar/bat mitzvahs. Sporting events may include sporting competitions or matches (e.g., football games), charity runs/walks (e.g., 5Ks), or tournaments (e.g., golf).

To become an event manager, you will typically need at least a bachelor’s degree in event management or a related field. Many event managers also have experience working in the hospitality industry. If you’re interested in pursuing a career in event management, consider studying hospitality management or business with a concentration in event management.

Facility and Venue Management

The facility and venue management concentration focuses on the business aspects of running a sports facility or venue. You’ll learn about everything from event planning and operations to ticket sales and marketing.
