Sport Administration

Sport Administration is a process of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling the activities and resources of a sport organization. The elective course will cover topics related to Sport Administration and will provide students with an overview of the sport industry. This course is beneficial for students who are interested in pursuing a career in sport management.

Introduction to Sport Administration

This course will provide students with an overview of the American sport industry. The course will address the structure and organization of sport at the amateur, intercollegiate, professional, and Olympic levels. Students will be expected to analyze critically the issues impacting today’s sport industry.

Sport Governance

The mission of the Sport Governance graduate program is to develop ethical, effective and culturally competent leaders in the sport industry. The program provides students the opportunity to study and conduct research on critical issues related to the organizational management of sport entities including, but not limited to, domestic and international governing bodies, intercollegiate athletics, professional sport leagues, clubs/teams, sporst-for-development organizations, and events.

Sport Finance

Sport finance is the study of the revenue and expenditure systems of sport businesses and organizations. In particular, it focuses on how these systems are used to generate, distribute, and use funds within sport organizations. As such, sport finance is concerned with both the financial aspects of sport organizations and the economic impact of sports on society.

Sport finance is a relatively new field of study that has emerged only in the past few decades. However, it has quickly become one of the most popular areas of research in the field of sport management. This is due in large part to the growing realization that sport organizations are businesses and, as such, must be run in a financially responsible manner. As a result, an understanding of sport finance is now considered to be essential for those wishing to work in the sport industry.

Sport Marketing

An in-depth study of marketing principles as applied to the sport industry. Emphasis is placed on product development, promotion, pricing, and distribution as they relate to the sale of sport products and services.

Sport Coaching

This class will provide an overview of the theories, practices, and ethical issues associated with coaching sport. The course will identify the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for effective coaching at various levels of sport. Special emphasis will be placed on the developmentally appropriate coaching behaviors that promote positive youth development and lifelong participation in sport.

Introduction to Sport Coaching

This course is designed to provide the student with an overview of the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to be an effective coach. Attention will be given to major components of the coaching process including but not limited to planning, weekly/daily schedules, practices, skill development, motivation, game coaching and preparation, scouting opponents, strength and conditioning, dealing with officials, working with the media, developing a coaching philosophy and style, parental relations and influence of society on athletes. The anylitical skills required of coaches to improve their athletes’ performances will also be explored.

Sport Psychology

The science of sport psychology has come a long way in recent years, and there is now a greater understanding of the motors behind an athlete’s behavior. This knowledge can be harnessed by coaches to help athletes perform at their peak.

Sport psychology covers a wide range of topics, including motivation, focus, anxiety, nutrition, and team dynamics. A coach who understands the principles of sport psychology can create an environment that helps athletes to thrive.

Sport Sociology

Sport sociology is the study of the relationship between sport and society. It examines how sport reflects and shapes social values, institutions, and behaviors. Sport sociologists use a variety of methods to study sport, including surveys, interviews, observations, and analysis of secondary data.

Sport sociologists are interested in a wide range of topics, including the social construction of race and gender in sport, the impact of sport on social stratification, the sociology of exercise and physical activity, the sociology of deviance in sport, and the relationship between sport and education.

Motor Learning and Performance

Motor learning is a relatively permanent change in the capability to perform a skill as a result of practice or experience. The three main types of practice are massed (concentrated in time), distributed (spaced over time), and interleaved (alternated with other tasks/skills). Different types of practice lead to different motor learning outcomes; therefore, it is important for coaches to understand how motor learning works and to design practices that will lead to the best outcomes for their athletes. Motor performance is what we actually do when we execute a skill; it is the “product” of motor learning.
