Course Offerings

Sport Marketing

Sport Marketing (SM) – This course focuses on marketing principles and their application to sport and fitness organizations. Emphasis is placed on the unique characteristics of marketing within the sport industry, marketing research, target markets, product development, pricing, promotion, and distribution.

– Prerequisite: SMGT 317 with a minimum grade of C-.
– Recommended Background: Familiarity with computers and Microsoft Office applications.

Sport Finance

Sport Finance (SPMT 405) – 3 credits
This course is designed to provide an introduction to the financial aspects of the sport industry. The course will cover topics such as revenue and expenses, financing, capital budgeting, working capital management, and risk management.

Sport Law

Sport Law is designed to introduce students to the legal issues that arise in the sport industry. The course will cover a variety of topics including athlete contracts, facility leasing and construction, title IX, media rights, and other contemporary legal issues in sport.

Sport Finance

People who work in sport finance hold positions in a wide variety of organizations, including professional and amateur sport clubs, Sport governing bodies, Sport marketing and management agencies, Sport event management companies, and Sport facilities. As the sport industry continues to grow, the demand for qualified sport finance professionals will continue to increase.

The Sport Finance elective at Texas A&M will prepare students for careers in sport finance through a combination of classroom instruction and real-world experience. The coursework will cover topics such as financial accounting, budgeting, cash flow management, risk management, and investment analysis. In addition, students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios through case studies and internships.

Sport Law

Sport law is a growing field with many career opportunities. Students who take sport management electives at Texas A&M will have the opportunity to learn about legal issues in the sport industry and how to apply the law to real-world problems. Admission Requirements

The Department of Sport Management at Texas A&M University offers a unique undergraduate experience that integrates coursework in business, communications, education, kinesiology and psychology. The sport management program is designed to prepare students for careers in the sport industry. Admission to the Sport Management program is limited and competitive. A student wishing to pursue the sport management degree must first be admitted to Texas A&M University.

Sport Management Electives

The Department of Sport Management at Texas A&M University offers a range of undergraduate and graduate electives to allow students to specialize their studies within the sport management degree program. Students can choose from electives such as Recreational Sport Management, Sport Marketing, or Event and Facility Management.

To be eligible to take sport management electives, students must first complete the following core courses:
-Introduction to Sport Management
-Organizational Behavior in Sport
-Principles of Marketing in Sport
-Financial Aspects of Sport
-Legal Aspects of Sport
-Ethics in Sport.

In addition, students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and must have completed at least 60 credit hours before taking any sport management electives.

Curriculum

The sport management electives at Texas A&M provide a well-rounded curriculum that gives students a comprehensive understanding of the sport industry. These classes provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful in a career in sport management.

Sport Marketing

SMGT 313 – Sport Marketing
An overview of the concepts and processes involved in the marketing of sport and sport related products and services. Major attention is given to market segmentation, targeting, and positioning; product planning; promotion; price; distribution; and consumer behavior as they relate to sport marketing.

SMGT 331 – Principles of Coaching
This course is designed to provide students an overview of the profession of coaching. Students will learn the role coaches play in developing athletes, teams, and programs. Topics will include an overview of the coaching process, ethical considerations in coaching, program administration, and current issues in coaching.

SMGT 344 – Sport Facility and Event Management
An introduction to sport facility management including an overview of facility types, efficient use and design, finance and revenue generation, legal/risk issues, safety concerns, customer service applications along with an examination of various facility types. Methods for successfully marketing events will also be explored as well as ways to generate revenue through sponsorships, merchandising and licensing. Prerequisite: SMGT 313

Sport Finance

Students in this field learn about financial accounting, economics, and marketing within the context of the sports industry.

Sport Law

Sport Law is designed to provide students with an understanding of the complex legal environment of sports. The course covers a variety of topics including athlete compensation and contracts, Title IX, discrimination, drugs in sport, venue selection and construction, concussion litigation, fan behavior, athlete agents, and media relations.
