In the 1930s, before Sport Flyers Airport existed, the site was used as an emergency landing strip for Western Air Express. In 1940, it was transformed into a full-fledged airport and given the name Brookshire Airport. The airport was used by the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. After the war, the airport was turned over to the city of Brookshire and renamed Sport Flyers Airport.

The airport was founded in 1979 by a group of local pilots who wanted a place to fly their small planes. They built a 2,500-foot (760 m) grass runway and started operations. In the early 1980s, the runway was paved and extended to 3,500 feet (1,100 m). A few years later, the runway was extended again to 5,000 feet (1,500 m).
