History
In the early 1880s, when Texas was still a frontier state, two young brothers from Missouri—John Adam and Benjamin Franklin “B.F.” Percy—decided to strike out on their own and head west. After a brief stint in Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma), the brothers settled in Odessa, where they opened a small general store.
B.F. Percy was an enterprising businessman, and he quickly realized that the windswept plains of West Texas were well suited for another commodity: cattle. In 1884, he founded the P & P Cattle Company and began buying up large tracts of land on which to graze his herds. The company prospered, and within a few years B.F. Percy had become one of the largest landowners in the state of Texas.
In 1890, John Adam Percy decided to move to California, leaving B.F. Percy in charge of the family business interests in Odessa. B.F. Percy did not waste any time putting his stamp on the city: In 1891, he built a large brick courthouse in the center of town, and two years later he constructed a three-story hotel (the first in Odessa) adjacent to the railroad tracks.
