History
In 1925, a group of parents in the small town of Royal, Texas, decided that their children deserved a better education than what was available in the public schools. They pooled their resources and founded the Royal High School, a private school that offered a college preparatory curriculum. The school was so successful that it soon outgrew its original facility and moved to a larger campus.
Royal High School quickly gained a reputation for academic excellence, and it began to attract students from all over Texas. In addition to its strong academic program, the school also developed a competitive sports program. The Royals were particularly successful in basketball, winning state championships in 1941 and 1942.
The success of the Royal High School came to an abrupt end in the 1950s when the town of Royal was annexed by the city of Houston. The high school was forced to close its doors, and its students were absorbed into the Houston public school system.
