The official state sport of Texas is rodeo. Rodeo is a competitive sport that involves riding and roping livestock. There are many different rodeo events, such as bull riding, saddle bronc riding, bareback bronc riding, steer wrestling, team roping, and calf roping.
How did this come to be?
In 1993, the Texas Legislature designated rodeo as the official state sport. While there are other states with official state sports (such as Alaska’s dog mushing), Texas is the only state with rodeo recognized in this way.
So how did rodeo become the official state sport of Texas? Well, it all started back in the early 1900s when a group of cowboys decided to put on their own competition in order to prove who was the best at what they did. From there, rodeo rapidly grew in popularity and began to spread throughout the Western United States.
Rodeo eventually made its way to Texas, where it became a popular pastime among cowboys and ranchers. In fact, Texas even has its own professional rodeo association – the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA).
With such a rich history and tradition, it’s no wonder that rodeo was eventually named the official state sport of Texas!
