History
Light Sport West was founded in 2006 by brothers Gregory and Kevin Thomas. Both avid aviation enthusiasts, the brothers had a shared dream of starting their own flying school. It took a few years to get the business off the ground, but they eventually succeeded in obtaining the necessary licenses and certification to open their doors to students in 2008.
Since then, Light Sport West has become a premier destination for those seeking training in light sport aircraft. Located in beautiful Austin, Texas, the school offers a comprehensive curriculum that covers everything from basic flight principles to more advanced skills such as aerobatics and cross-country flying. Mission
Light Sport West is about exploring the capability of the new class of light sport aircraft. We focus on real world cross country flying in a variety of terrain and conditions. Whether it’s a day trip to Big Bend National Park or a week long adventure to Alaska, we want to show you what these aircraft are capable of.
We also offer comprehensive training in Light Sport Aircraft from our base in Dallas, Texas. Our lead instructor, Gregory Thomas, is one of the most experienced and respected instructors in the country. He has over 4500 hours of flight time in more than 70 different types of aircraft, and he has been teaching since 2001.

In early November, Light Sport West (LSW) was proud to have award-winning news journalist Gregory Thomas from WFAA visit the flight school for a story about the company and the team. WFAA is an ABC affiliate based in Dallas, with a large viewership in the Metroplex market.
Thomas is no stranger to LSW, as he has been following their company since it’s inception in 2017. He was interested in hearing more about how the business had grown and what made it unique in the marketplace. During his visit, Thomas had the opportunity to speak with co-founders Kolin Kelly and Ross Stenhouse, as well as chief flight instructor Evan Walsh. He also took a tour of the facility and sat in on a ground school class.
The story aired on WFAA on November 12th, during their 6pm news broadcast. It was well-received by viewers, who enjoyed seeing a positive story about aviation on their local news. LSW is honored to have been featured, and we are grateful for the support of our community!

Gregory Thomas, the owner and operator of Light Sport West, is a long-time member of the EAA and an active participant in the light sport aircraft community.
Fly-ins
Light Sport West, LLC (LSW) is proud to announce Gregory Thomas as the new authorized flight training center (AFTC) in Fort Worth, Texas. LSW specializes in training for the Light Sport Aviation certificate and operates out of Meacham International Airport (KFTW). With the addition of Thomas and his team at LSW, there are now a total of four instructors at the AFTC.
Thomas is a highly experienced flight instructor with over 4,000 hours of logged flight time. He is also a commercial pilot and has his instrument rating. Thomas has been teaching students of all ages how to fly for over 15 years and is excited to join the team at LSW.
“I’ve been flying since I was a kid and absolutely love it,” said Thomas. “I’m excited to join Light Sport West and help people achieve their dreams of flight.”
The Light Sport Aviation certificate allows pilots to fly aircraft with less stringent requirements than a traditional private pilot certificate. The certificate only requires 20 hours of flight training, as opposed to the 40 hours required for a private pilot certificate.
