What are CAPTE’s requirements?
The Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) is an accrediting agency that is recognized by the US Department of Education (USDE) and the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). CAPTE accredits physical therapist (PT) education programs at the entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) and at the post-professional Doctor of Science in Physical Therapy (DScPT) levels.
In order to be accredited by CAPTE, a PT education program must meet the Standards and Guidelines for the Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Preparation of Physical Therapists. These standards are reviewed and updated periodically. The standards cover all aspects of a PT education program, from the qualifications of the faculty to the resources available to students.

What is the program’s curriculum?
The Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences at Texas Tech University offers a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Sport and Science (BSES) with an emphasis in Allied Health Professions. The BSES degree program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). The curriculum for the BSES degree program is designed to prepare students for careers in the allied health professions, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, and other related fields. The BSES degree program is a four-year, full-time program that includes coursework in exercise physiology, anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, and other related subjects.

In order to be eligible for the Exercise Sport and Science program at Texas Tech, students must first complete a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. They must also have taken and passed the GRE within the last five years. In addition, they must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in their undergraduate coursework.

CAPTE accreditation is voluntary; however, most state licensure boards require graduation from a CAPTE-accredited physical therapy program as a prerequisite for licensure.
In addition, many employers prefer to hire physical therapists who have graduated from CAPTE-accredited programs. CAPTE-accredited programs must undergo a comprehensive review every eight years to maintain their accreditation status.
How to Get CAPTE Accreditation

Some of these standards include having a certain number of full-time faculty, having a minimum number of clinical education experiences, and more.
What are the steps to get CAPTE accreditation?
The steps to CAPTE accreditation are as follows:
1. Submit an initial application including a $225 non-refundable processing fee.
2. Receive a site visit from CAPTE.
3. Submit a self-study report documenting compliance with CAPTE standards.
4. Host a site visit from CAPTE evaluators.
5. Pay accreditation fees (this step only applies if your program is granted accreditation).
How long does it take to get CAPTE accreditation?
The CAPTE process can take anywhere from 18 months to 2 years, depending on the size and complexity of your program. There are a few key steps in the process:
1. Submit a complete self-study report that meets all of CAPTE’s standards and requirements.
2. Have a team of site visitors come to your program to verify that everything in the self-study report is accurate and up-to-date.
3. After the site visit, the team will write a report detailing their findings. This report will be reviewed by CAPTE’s Board of Directors.
4. If the Board of Directors approves your program, you will be granted accreditation!
