What is UIL?
UIL is the University Interscholastic League, and it is a Texas-based organization that offers academic, athletic, and musical competitions for high school students. Cheerleading is not currently a UIL sport in Texas.
What sports are in UIL?
The University Interscholastic League (UIL) offers the largest selection of athletic, musical and academic contests in the nation. Created in 1910, the UIL has grown into the largest inter-school organization of its kind in the world. Cheerleading is not currently a sport recognized by the University Interscholastic League (UIL). UIL only recognizes eleven sports for girls: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field, volleyball and water polo. Cheerleading could potentially become a UIL sport in the future, but for now it is not.
What are the requirements for a sport to be in UIL?
In order for a sport to be in UIL, the sport must meet certain requirements. The requirements are as follows:
-The sport must be supported by a state or national federation or association.
-The sport must have a minimum of five schools participating at the varsity level.
-The sport must have a state or regional championship.
-The sport must have an established set of rules that are followed by all schools participating in the sport.
If a sport meets these requirements, it can be considered for inclusion in UIL.
Why isn’t Cheerleading a UIL sport in Texas?
UIL does not consider cheerleading to be a sport because it does not meet the requirements that are necessary for a sport. Cheerleading does not have an organized competitive structure and does not require physical skills or stamina.
