All people who drive a commercial motor vehicle must have a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). In order to get a CDL, you must pass a written exam and a skills test. The type of CDL you need depends on the type of vehicle you will be driving.
Class C
You will need a Class C CDL if you are driving:
-A vehicle that is designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver
-A vehicle that is placarded for hazardous materials

To drive a sport utility vehicle (SUV) in Texas, you must have a Class C driver’s license. A Class C license allows you to operate any vehicle that does not fall into another category, such as a motorcycle or commercial vehicle. If you want to drive an SUV that is also used for commercial purposes, you will need to obtain a Class B license in addition to your Class C license.
