Introduction
In recent decades, there has been a significant push for gender equity in college sports, with a particular focus on ensuring that female athletes have the same opportunities as male athletes.
One area of concern is the number of athletic scholarships that are available for men’s and women’s sports. Athletic scholarships can be extremely helpful in covering the cost of college, and so it is important to ensure that there is equal opportunities for both men and women.
A recent study looked at the distribution of athletic scholarships at one large university – the University of Texas. The results showed that there were significantly more scholarships available for men’s sports than for women’s sports. In fact, the gap was quite sizable, with nearly twice as many scholarships available for men’s sports as there were for women’s sports.
This study provides valuable data on the current state of affairs regarding gender equity in college athletics. It is clear that there is still a long way to go in order to ensure that female athletes have the same opportunities as male athletes.
Data on Scholarships in Mens and Womens Sports at Texas
According to the NCAA, in the 2016-2017 academic year, there were 123 schools that offered mens sports at the Division I level, while 276 schools offered womens sports. The average number of athletes per school was 375 for mens sports and 544 for womens sports. The average scholarship amount awarded per athlete was $11,291 for mens sports and $15,994 for womens sports. In total, $2.9 billion was awarded in athletic scholarships at the Division I level, with $1.6 billion going to women and $1.3 billion going to men.
There are a number of reasons why women may receive more athletic scholarships than men. For one, there are more opportunities for women to compete in collegiate athletics than there are for men. Additionally, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 requires that schools receiving federal funds must offer equal opportunities for men and women in all aspects of education, including athletics. Finally, colleges and universities have become increasingly aware of the importance of gender equity in athletics and have made a concerted effort to provide more opportunities and resources for female athletes.
Conclusions Drawn from Data
In order to get a more accurate understanding of how many scholarships in men’s sports compared to women’s sports are available at Texas, we decided to look at the data in a few different ways.
First, we looked at the percentage of athletes on each team that were on scholarship. We found that the average percentage of athletes on scholarship for men’s teams was 63%, while the average percentage of athletes on scholarship for women’s teams was 56%.
Next, we looked at the number of scholarships available for each sport. We found that there were an average of 12 scholarships available for men’s sports and 9 scholarships available for women’s sports.
Lastly, we looked at the total number of athletes in each sport. We found that there were an average of 145 athletes on men’s teams and 94 athletes on women’s teams.
Based on our findings, it appears that there are more scholarships available for men’s sports than there are for women’s sports at Texas. However, when you compare the total number of athletes in each sport, it is clear that there are more opportunities for females to compete in college athletics than males.
