Location
Horseshoe Bay is a city in Llano County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,565 at the 2010 census.[3] It is part of the Greater Austin metropolitan area.
The city is named for nearby Horseshoe Bay on Lake LBJ. It is a resort community that is home to three golf courses, a tennis club, and a private resident-only waterpark. Horseshoe Bay is also known for being the home of several retirement communities.
History
The first settlers in the Horseshoe Bay area were the Tonkawa and Comanche Indians. The Tonkawas were a nomadic tribe who which migrated to the area in search of food and shelter. The Comanches were a warrior tribe who often clashed with the Tonkawas. The Comanches eventually subdued the Tonkawas and forced them to move west.
In the early 1800s, Anglo settlers began to move into the area. These settlers were drawn to the land by the promise of cheap land and the opportunity to start a new life. Many of these settlers were farmers who set up small farms in the rural areas surrounding Horseshoe Bay.
During the Civil War, Horseshoe Bay was a Confederate stronghold. The Union Army attempted to take control of the area several times, but each time they were repelled by the Confederates.
After the war, Horseshoe Bay remained a rural farming community. However, this began to change in the early 1900s when tourists started coming to the area to enjoy its natural beauty. This influx of tourists led to the development of several resorts in Horseshoe Bay.
Today, Horseshoe Bay is a popular tourist destination known for its beautiful golf courses and water sports facilities.
