History
Hill’s Sport Shop in Amarillo, Texas, was originally founded in 1921 by W.D. Hill. The store was originally located on Sixth Street in downtown Amarillo. In its early years, the store specialized in selling sporting goods and equipment for a variety of sports, including baseball, basketball, football, boxing, and more. In addition to selling sporting goods, the store also had a small rating department where Hill would appraise sports memorabilia.
In the 1930s, the store moved to a new location on Polk Street. During World War II, the store stopped selling sporting goods and instead focused on selling war supplies. After the war ended, the store reverted back to selling sporting goods. In the 1950s, Hill’s Sport Shop became one of the first stores in Amarillo to sell firearms and ammunition.
In 1962, W.D. Hill retired and sold the business to his son-in-law Tom day. Tom Day ran the business until his death in 1993. His wife Mary Day then took over ownership of the store and ran it until her death in 2013. The store is currently owned by their son Tommy Day.
