Prelude to Dallas
After the NHL added San Francisco and Los Angeles in 1967, interest in adding additional franchises had grown. Despite strong consideration given to both Buffalo and Vancouver, the NHL instead awarded franchises to Anaheim and Philadelphia on June 6, 1967.[8][9] Two weeks later on June 22 at an owners meeting held in Montreal, Harry Nichols’s group was awarded a conditional franchise for the Metropolitan Sports Association (MSA), which was given the option to purchase either Minnesota or Pittsburgh if either franchise became available.[10] At that time Jack Kent Cooke was already a majority owner of the Los Angeles Kings and he quickly became interested in purchasing a second franchise as well.Requirements for admission into the league included West coast representation (in order for there to be regional rivalries like those which existed back east), a suitable arena (the Los Angeles Sports Arena only seated about 12,500 people at that time), and ownership by a person or persons willing to spend $2 million on an expansion fee ($13 million in today’s dollars).[11][12] Shortly after being awarded his franchise Cooke set up a temporary office in Minneapolis and started looking for suitable arena sites.[13] Cooke reached an agreement with George W. Gillett Jr., owner at that time of both Montreal’s Forum as well as several US Brahman cattle ranches including one just north of Bloomington called Rosebud Enterprises. Gillett would partner with Cooke not only on arenas but also acquire an interest in any new team that would come to Minnesota through Cooke’s deal with Nichols.[14] This eventually led Gillett becoming controlling owner of not just the Pittsburgh Penguins but also several other NHL teams including eventual sale of his stake in French Lick Springs Hotel which owned minor league baseball’s Hickory Crawdads from 2001-2020. As part of Gillett’s agreement with Cooke he would take over management responsibility for all aspects related to running an NHL team out of Bloomington including hiring personnel.[15][16]
On October 9, 1968, Jerry Leigh Wilkinson became majority shareholder after purchasing 51% interest in MSA while retaining 49%. Leigh Wilkinson who had been Vice Chairman since June 1968 would serve as Chairman & Governor while Jack Kent Cooke would serve as President & Alternate Governor.[17][
