Overuse Injuries

These are injuries that occur from repeated stress on a particular area of the body, often from repetitive motion or from doing too much too soon. Overuse injuries are common in young athletes whose bodies are still developing and in weekend warriors who may not be in peak condition. They can often be treated with rest, ice, physical therapy and, in some cases, surgery. Some common overuse injuries we treat include:

-Achilles tendonitis
-Ankle sprains
-Elbow tendonitis
-Golfer’s elbow
-Gymnast’s wrist
-Hamstring strains
-Shin splints
-Shoulder impingement syndrome
-Swimmer’s shoulder

Arthritis

Arthritis is a general term for conditions that affect the joints and surrounding tissues. Joints are places in the body where bones come together, such as the knees, hips, and shoulders. The joint is surrounded by a capsule of tissue called the synovium, which produces a fluid that lubricates and nourishes the joint.

There are many different types of arthritis, but the most common are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a “wear-and-tear” type of arthritis that often occurs with aging. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease, which means that the body’s immune system attacks the tissues around the joints. Other types of arthritis include gout, lupus, and fibromyalgia.

Symptoms of arthritis can vary, but often include pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced range of motion. Treatment depends on the type of arthritis but may include medication, physical therapy, exercise, and weight loss.
