Location
Lubbock is a city in and the county seat of Lubbock County, Texas, United States. The city is on the Llano Estacado and sits at the intersection of Interstate 27 and U.S. Route 87, approximately 84 miles (135 km) east of Amarillo and 35 miles (56 km) west of Littlefield. With a population of 258,862 in 2019, Lubbock is the 83rd-most populous city in the United States and fourth-most populous city in Texas. It is also thelargest contiguous city within the greater Permian Basin region.
Lubbock’s nickname, “Hub City”, derives from it being the economic, educational, and health-care hub of a multi-county region commonly called the South Plains. The area is heavily dependent on cotton farming and meatpacking; both have declined since their peak in the early 20th century. Lubbock remains a regional center for crop irrigation, specialty crops such as wind turbines, turkeys and jalapeños; cotton processing; dairy products; meatpacking; wool; fabricating steel for oil fields; vehicle assembly for Texas Tech University; Shane Co.; ConsolidatedFoods/Sara Lee Corporation baking facility distribution center for Sara Lee Corporation frozen desserts such as ice cream) among others in West Texas—the largest geographic territory without an Interstate Highway running through it until December 2014 when I-27 was completed from Amarillo to Lubbock.

The climate in Lubbock, Texas is classified as a hot semi-arid climate (Köppen climate classification BSh). The city experiences long and hot summers, relatively mild winters, and wide temperature variations. On average, Lubbock has 18 days per year with temperatures above 90 °F (32.2 °C), 168 days per year with temperatures below freezing, and 36 days with temperatures at or below 0 °F (−17.8 °C).
Precipitation is rather sparse throughout the year but is greatest in May and June. The wettest month on record was May 2015, when 16.86 inches (429 mm) of precipitation fell. Snowfall also varies greatly from year to year; the median snowfall is only 4.0 inches (10 cm), but in some years no snow falls while in others more than 20 inches (51 cm) can fall.
Lubbock’s location at the convergence of multiple large regional climate systems gives it a unique continental semi-arid climatic regime which is affected by Arctic air masses from the north during winter time, Pacific tropical air masses from the south during summertime, and Gulf moist air masses from the southeast during springtime. These merge to create Lubbock’s generally mild weather with ample wind throughout most of the year.
History
The Cardinals Sport Center in Lubbock, Texas is a historic stadium that was built in 1936. It is home to the Lubbock Cardinals minor league baseball team and has a seating capacity of 8,500. The stadium was originally built as a Works Progress Administration project and is one of the few surviving WPA stadiums in the country. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.
