The Austin Spurs
The Austin Spurs are an American professional basketball team in the NBA G League based in Austin, Texas. The Spurs compete in the NBA G League as an affiliate of the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Austin Spurs began play as the Spokane Shocks in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) in 1996.
History
The Austin Spurs are an American professional basketball team in the NBA G League based in Austin, Texas. The Spurs began play as the Charleston Gunners in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) in 1984. The franchise relocated to Austin in 2001, and are owned by the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Austin Spurs won their first and only NBA G League Championship in 2012. They play their home games at the H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.
The Austin Spurs began play as the Charleston Gunners in Charleston, South Carolina. The team was named after its first head coach and General Manager Gene Littles. The Gunners compiled a record of 132-122 during their four seasons in Charleston. In 1986, Harry Weltman became the team’s new General Manager, and took over head coaching duties from Littles. In 1988, Weltman hired Chris Bearde as head coach. Bearde led the team to a 36-28 record during his first season, but was fired after posting a 30-34 record during his second season.
In 2001, the team moved to Austin, Texas and were renamed the Austin Toros after a name-the-team contest chose Toros over Wranglers, Outlaws, Express and Wildcatters. In 2005, Jeff Van Gundy led the Toros to their first division championship with a 40-20 record. This was followed by two more division championships in 2006 and 2007 with records of 39-21 and 42-18 respectively. After losing in the conference finals in 2006 and 2007, Van Gundy led the Toros to their first ever NBA D-League championship with a 122-110 victory over the Idaho Stampede on April 22nd 2008.Van Gundy stepped down as coach following the Toros’ championship run and was replaced by Lionel Hollins who had served as an assistant coach under Van Gundy during his time with Houston Rockets

Olympic swimmer Ricky Berens was born and raised in Austin, and he holds two gold medals from his time on the U.S. national team. Golfer Justin Leonard also hails from Austin, and he won the PGA Championshipin 1997.
