Academy Sports + Outdoors, one of the nation’s largest sporting goods retailers, today announced the grand opening of its first store in Texas. The new 140,000 square-foot store is located at 7403 W. Interstate 10 in Katy, TX.
The retailer offers a broad assortment of quality hunting, fishing and camping equipment and gear along with sports and leisure products at everyday low prices. In addition, the store features a wide variety of both indoor and outdoor footwear, apparel and much more.
History of the company
Academy Sports + Outdoors is an American sporting goods discount store chain. Headquartered in Katy, Texas, the company operates over 240 stores throughout Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.
The company was founded by Arthur M. Gochman in 1938 as a fishing tackle shop called Academy Sales in San Angelo, Texas. As the business grew Academy began selling other outdoor gear and eventually expanded into sporting goods with the purchase of Brownwood Sporting Goods in 1953. In 1960s the company began to open new locations outside of Texas. The 1970s saw a period of rapid expansion for the company as it opened new stores at a rate of nearly one per month. By 1979 there were fifty stores in operation. In 1988 Academy made its first acquisition outside of the sports market when it purchased Tandycrafts Inc., a craft supplies retailer based in Fort Worth. The Tandycrafts acquisition allowed Academy to begin to open stores in malls where it had not previously had a presence.
In 2011 the company announced it would be relocating its corporate headquarters from Katy to Katy Mills Mall which is also located in Katy. In 2012 Academy Sports + Outdoors was ranked #16 on Forbes’ list of America’s largest private companies with an estimated revenue of $4 billion
The first store in Texas
Academy Sports + Outdoors, one of the nation’s largest sporting goods retailers, today opened its first store in Texas. The new store, located at 12615 N. IH-35 in Austin, is the company’s sixth location nationwide.

Academy Sports + Outdoors is excited to announce its first store in the state of Texas! The new location will be in the city of Houston and is set to open in early 2020.
This move marks a significant expansion for the company, which was founded in 1938 in Kansas City, Missouri. Currently, Academy Sports + Outdoors operates over 240 stores across 16 states. The new Houston store will bring the company’s total store count to 241.
The new Houston location will span over 46,000 square feet and will offer a wide variety of sporting goods and outdoor gear for everyone from beginner athletes to experienced professionals. shoppers can expect to find everything from hunting and fishing supplies to golf clubs and tents. In addition, the store will feature a full-service garage with car lifts and tools available for rental.
