Academy Sports + Outdoors is an American sporting goods discount store chain. Headquartered in Katy, Texas, the company operates over 240 stores throughout Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. In 2011 it was announced that Academy Sports + Outdoors would be expanding its operations into Colorado. With its entrance into the Colorado market Academy opened stores in Denver suburbs Thornton and Aurora in late 2012.

History of Academy Sports

Academy Sports + Outdoors was founded in 1938 by Richard Nelson and his brother, John Jefferson Nelson. The Nelson brothers began their careers by working for their father’s retail business, Oscar W. dreamt of owning his own retail business, and after several years of saving, they were able to purchase a 6,000 square foot Army-Navy store in San Antonio, Texas. It was here that they developed the idea of stocking their shelves with hard-to-find items that other retailers didn’t carry; a strategy that would become the cornerstone of their business model.

With the success of their first store, the Nelsons were able to open additional locations across Texas. In the late 1950s, the brothers began to focus on the sporting goods market and developed a niche in selling hunting and fishing supplies. This gamble paid off and by the early 1960s, sporting goods became the primary focus of all Academy locations.

In 1968, John Jefferson Nelson passed away unexpectedly and Richard Nelson assumed full ownership of the company. Under his leadership, Academy continued to grow rapidly throughout the 1970s and 80s; expanding beyond Texas for the first time with stores in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Oklahoma.

Throughout its history, Academy has remained true to its roots as a family-owned business. In 2007, Richard Nelson retired and sold the company to appearance Group International; a private equity firm based in Boston Massachusetts. Today, Academy operates over 240 stores in 16 states across the southeastern United States
