Academy Sports + Outdoors is excited to announce the grand opening of its newest store in Houston, TX. The new location will be the company’s fifth store in the Houston area. The new Academy Sports + Outdoors store is located at 12141 Katy Freeway, and will be open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
History of Academy Sports + Outdoors
Academy Sports + Outdoors opened its first store in 1938 in San Antonio, Texas. The company was founded by Mitt Romney, the current CEO of Academy Sports + Outdoors. The original store was just 5,000 square feet and stocked only a few items, including fishing supplies, shotguns, and ammunition. In the early years, the company focused on catering to the needs of hunters and fishermen.
Academy Sports + Outdoors grew steadily in the following decades, expanding its product offerings to include camping gear, gardening supplies, and eventually sporting goods and apparel. The company went public in 1973 and expanded rapidly in the 1980s and 1990s, opening new stores across the southern United States.
Today, Academy Sports + Outdoors operates over 240 stores in 16 states. The company remains headquartered in Katy, Texas and continues to be family-owned and operated.

Academy Sports + Outdoors is excited to announce the grand opening of its newest store in Houston, TX. The new 72,000-square-foot store is located at 14103 Westheimer Rd., at the NE corner of Westheimer Rd. and Campbell Rd. in Houston. The store will open its doors to shoppers at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, March 2.
“We are thrilled to expand our presence in Houston and better serve the growing communities west of Downtown with a convenient, new location,” said CEO and President Ken Wheeler. “As a leading sporting goods retailer, we want to ensure our customers have easy access to everything they need for their active lifestyles – whether it’s for working out, playing a pick-up game or training for a marathon – and we are confident this new store will do just that.”
The first Academy Sports + Outdoors opened in 1938 in San Antonio, TX. Since then, the company has expanded its footprint across the Southern US and now operates over 238 stores in 16 states from Maryland to Florida and Texas.
