Introduction

The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size car produced by Chevrolet. The car was introduced in 1964 as a compact car, and it was produced until 1983. In 1978, the Malibu was redesigned and became a larger car. The Malibu Super Sport, or SS, was introduced in 1966 and was produced until 1969. It was based on the Malibu, but it had a V8 engine and a performance-tuned suspension.

The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size car manufactured and marketed by Chevrolet from 1964 to 1983 and since 1997. The Malibu began as a trim-level of the Chevrolet Chevelle, becoming its own model line in 1978. Originally a rear-wheel-drive intermediate, GM revived the Malibu nameplate as a front-wheel-drive car in February 1997.

For the 1966 model year, the Malibu was complemented with lower priced Chevelle 300 and 300 Deluxe models (since renamed to Malibu in 1969). The Malibu SS was replaced by the Chevelle SS for 1967, but returned in 1968 when SS 396 series was introduced. The 1968 model received new paint colors, new interiors, and restyled dashboards and steering wheels; engine offerings now included two new small block V8s of 327+ cu in (5.4+ L) or 350+ cu in (5.7 L), two big block V8s of 402 cu in (6.6 L) or 427 cu in (7.0 L), as well as six-, seven-, and eight-cylinder engines; transmissions were either Muncie M20 M21 or Turbo Hydramatic 400 three speed automatic; power disc brakes were standard with all but six cylinder engines; dealer installed air conditioning was offered for all models except wagons.[1]

The 1967 model received side marker lights on all four fenders, required by federal law.[2] New exterior colors included Sebring Silver Metallic, Ascot Blue, Cortez Silver Metallic (a color unique to 1967), Glacier Blue Poly (a low production color available only on 400 SS models), Azure Teal Poly, Burgundy Mist Metallic,57[3] Chateau Slate Poly, Ecto Mist metallic (a color unique to 1967 and early 1968 Chevelles), Evening Orchid Metallic and Ermine White.[1][4]

The Malibu continued as Chevrolet’s mid-sized entry throughout the 1970s. It started off the decade with one of its most successful years with almost 573,000 cars sold; this was despite strike action at Chevrolet’s Flint Michigan assembly factory which lasted from September 28 through November 10.[5] In response to rising fuel prices,[6][7][8] Chevy replaced the standard six-cylinder engine with a 155 hp 230 inline six for 1970.[9] A new body style arriving midway through the 1970 year brought about refreshed styling including exposed headlamps behind grilles that no longer wrapped around to the fenders like on previous models – although wraparound headlamp treatments would return on certain special edition versions later on down the line. Similar changes were made inside including a more modern instrument panel design shared with other GM vehicles of this era like Buick Apollo/Buick Skylark/Oldsmobile Starfire/Pontiac Ventura/Pontiac Firebird/Pontiac GTO/Cadillac Eldorado & Cadillac Seville). Additional changes included relocating the ignition key from the instrument panel to next to steering column as well as an update of GM’s THM350 3 speed automatic transmission becoming standard equipment across all powertrains once again while an MP3 player Aux input jack became standard along with driver & passenger airbags(the latter not available until 1971 due to supply issues) appearance & suspension wise changes for this year consisted chrome rear bumpers for all models & full width front & rear side marker lights becoming mandatory(as mandated by uS federal law). For 1971 only 17 inch wide rims became available instead of 15 inchers while chrome spoke hubcaps became available on non ss models while powertrain choices remained unchanged across all body styles although Disc brakes were now standard equipment on all models regardless of which engine they came equipped with.[10][11][12][13]

Originally a rear-wheel-drive intermediate, GM revived the Malibu nameplate as a front-wheel-drive car in February 1997. Production ended in May 2003 and was replaced by the Chevrolet Malibu Classic.

For the 1962 model year, Chevrolet produced an upscale trim package for the Chevy II called the Nova 400 series. The Nova 400 featured gemstone accents, deluxe wheel covers, plusher interiors with metallic dash trim panels, ing and center console options.

The Malibu Super Sport (SS) was the performance trim level of the Malibu from 1964 to 1972.

In response to the success of Ford’s 1964½ Mustang, Chevrolet introduced the Malibu SS on February 3, 1964 as a sporty trim level of the Malibu hardtop. The 1964½ Malibu SS came with a special bowtie grille, chrome engine accents, bucket seats, and floor shifter. It could be ordered with any inline-six or V8 engine offered on other Malibus. Powerglide was the only automatic transmission initially available; however, Muncie close-ratio four-speed manual and Warner T10 three-speed manual transmissions were later options. Chevrolet also offered an SS package on its crossover station wagon model, the Chevelle 300 deluxe in 1965 and 1966.

The Malibu SS was produced through the 1967 model year. For 1968, the SS included revised front sheetmetal (shared with Chevelles of all models), rechromed bumpers and side moldings, restyled wheel covers (shared with non-SS Chevelles), new interior trim unique to the SS including door panels with simulated woodgrain inserts. The 1968 introduction of the Chevelle Concours Estate wagon saw Chevrolet offer an optional “Simulated Woodgrain Side Molding” appearance package which included brushed aluminum lower rocker panel inserts similar to those found on SS models.

The Super Sport became its own separate series in 1968 (but without unique exterior sheetmetal shared only with other Super Sports) and consisted of an upscale trim level featuring comfort and convenience items such as special vinyl upholstery with separate headrests for all seating positions (a $42 option), deluxe steering wheel, woodgrain console insert (standard on floor-shift cars), full carpeting in place of rubber floor mats, Astro Ventilation system that allowed outside fresh air to enter through vents in the quarter windows even while they were closed, courtesy lights in all doors that operated whenever any door was opened or closed regardless if the dome light switch was turned on or off plus numerous other small but noticeable differences from non-Super Sport models

The exterior appearance of all 1968 Malibu Super Sports could be enhanced further by optional Rally Sport ($105) and/or Super Sport ($159) equipment packages that added special exterior badging plus Rally Sport included special concealed headlights that popped up automatically whenever the headlight switch was turned on plus unique wheels with bright hubcaps or wheel covers while either package could be ordered together on any 1968 Malibu including those without Super Sport trim.
