History
In the early 1900s, racing was a popular pastime amongst the wealthy. They would race their cars on public roads and sometimes bet on the outcomes. This led to dangerous conditions for both drivers and pedestrians. In response, the first closed-course racing facility was built in 1909 in Long Island, New York.
The first closed-course race in Texas was held in October of 1913 at a track in Houston. The track was made out of sand and clay and was one mile long. Eight cars raced in front of a crowd of over 5,000 people.
Racing continued to grow in popularity throughout the state and, by the mid-1920s, there were four major tracks operating in Texas: Austin Speedway, Amarillo Speedway, Houston Motordrome, and Beaumont Speedway. These tracks hosted national level races that attracted some of the biggest names in racing at the time, such as Barney Oldfield and Ralph DePalma.
With the onset of the Great Depression, racing began to decline in popularity. Many tracks closed down and, by 1935, there were no major racing facilities operating in Texas. It would be another 30 years before racing made a comeback in the state.
In 1966, a group of businessmen led by John Mecom Sr., decided to build a racetrack in Houston. Construction on the track began later that year and it opened in April of 1969 as Texas International Raceway (later renamed Houston International Raceway). The track quickly became a success and hosted two NASCAR races per year from 1971-1981.
The 1970s also saw the construction of two other major racetracks in Texas: Dallas International Motor Speedway (now known as Texas Motor Speedway) and San Antonio Raceway Park. These tracks allow for professional level drag racing and have helped to keep racing alive and thriving in Texas for over 50 years.
