Texas State’s move to the Football Bowl Subdivision allowed the program to get a lot of newer things: a new head coach, a renovated stadium and some new uniforms. Time to add an alternate helmet to that list.
After Wednesday’s practice, head coach Dennis Franchione unveiled a brand-new maroon helmet to the Bobcats. Texas State will wear them Saturday against Western Kentucky in the home finale.
“They’ve been asking about a maroon helmet forever and now we’ve had enough funding to do it,” Franchione said. “You know, it takes a little bit of money to buy 120 maroon helmets.”
Franchione said his team’s attitude continues to impress him.
“There is no entitlement to our football team,” Franchione said. “They’re excited when they get anything new and special. I remember last year they got new gloves and things like that. They’re appreciative, which I like.”
Will Franchione have any say of what uniform combination his team puts together to best show off those new lids?
“I let the players pick that,” Franchione said. “I don’t care what they wear.”
