Do you think the University of Southern Mississippi and the City of Hattiesburg are hungry for a win?
During a recent ceremony, the City of Hattiesburg declared Aug. 31 “Beat Texas State Day.”
To be fair, it has been a while since the Golden Eagles won a game. USM went 0-12 last year, just one season removed from a 12-2 campaign where it upset the University of Houston the Conference USA championship game and posted a 24-17 win over Nevada in the Hawaii Bowl.
When told about “Beat Texas State Day,” Texas State head coach Dennis Franchione deadpanned his answer.
“Well, I guess we’re the ones coming into town, so that’s what they oughta be declaring,” Franchione said. “You can’t beat Arkansas or anybody else.”
Then Franchione responded with nothing but class.
“They’re trying to get behind their team and they had a tough year last year,” Franchione said. “We know we’re going into a tough place to play and they want to get their program back to where it had been. I’ve coached against Southern Miss before and they have good football teams.”
