Bobcat Mailbag: Houston Edition

Our poll from a few days ago revealed a split in where the first Bobcat Mailbag (or Live Chat) should be conducted: either on our Facebook page or an open thread on this blog. We decided to put it both places this week.

So if you have a question about Texas State‘s season opener at the University of Houston, or the season in general, feel free to ask a question in the comments below.

Edit: Thanks for all of your comments. The Bobcat Mailbag is now closed.

College Football: Texas State names tentative starter for opener

Texas State head coach Dennis Franchione said he and his coaching staff have named a tentative starter for Saturday’s season opener at the University of Houston.

“We had a discussion today, as coaches, about who would start,” Franchione said. “We have a pretty good idea about that.”

“I will say this: we’re going to play both quarterbacks in the first half. Both deserve a chance to play and show what they can do. You have to send somebody out for the first series. I still feel like both of them are very capable of doing it. One of them has a little edge on a few things and the entire offensive room kind of felt that way today. We’ll discuss it again tomorrow and Friday morning before we make our final decision.”

Our take: All signs point to it being senior Shaun Rutherford, especially after junior Tyler Arndt‘s lackluster performance Wednesday afternoon at practice. While Arndt guided the first-string offense for a majority of the 17-period session, he didn’t look good running the spread option. Arndt fumbled twice — once on a pitch behind sophomore running back Terrence Franks and another on a botched handoff to sophomore Tim Gay.

Rutherford showed off his improved arm, rifling a pass to redshirt freshman wide receiver Jafus Gaines. As Gaines ran a slant, the ball could have only been one place as two defenders were in proximity, but Rutherford put it on a rope.

College Football: Two-Quarterback Model?

Texas State won’t be the only team in the nation using a two-quarterback system this year — or at least for the first game.

Florida head coach Will Muschamp recently said sophomores Jacoby Brissett and Jeff Driskel will each take a quarter in the first half of Saturday’s season opener. The Gators take on Bowling Green.

I asked head coach Dennis Franchione, who will lead the Bobcats into their first official season as members of the Football Bowl Subdivision this Saturday, what he thought of Muschamp’s model. Franchione has yet to name either junior Tyler Arndt or senior Shaun Rutherford the starter.

“I would anticipate we play both guys [against Houston],” Franchione said. “I would anticipate both of them playing in the first half and a little like Muschamp says how they do may determine how the second half goes. That’s my Tuesday feeling on things. We’ll see how Wednesday, Thursday and Friday works out.”

Texas State kicks off the 2012 season Saturday night at 7 p.m. inside Robertson Stadium.

College Football: Texas State’s Two-Quarterback System

As the start of the 2012 football season gets closer, it’s becoming more evident that the Texas State Bobcats will use a two-quarterback system. Junior Tyler Arndt and senior Shaun Rutherford each proved worthy during fall camp, leading the coaching staff to believe both quarterbacks deserve playing time.

So who is going to start against the University of Houston on Saturday? Right now, it’s a toss-up.

Here is what Texas State‘s duo had to say following Sunday’s practice.

College Football: Polling your thoughts about the Bobcat Live Chat

Due to CoverItLive going to a pay-per-click model, we’re going to need to switch up how we do the Bobcat Live Chat.

As of right now, there are two options for Thursday’s live chat. We can either have an open thread here (on the blog), or on our Facebook page. By the way, these would run all day.

What do you think?

Here is a view from the new lower level at Bobcat Stadium.

Texas State held a pep rally for new — and old — students alike Sunday night inside Bobcat Stadium. Following the pep rally, which 300 students attended, students were allowed to take a tour of the new North Side Complex.

Prior to the pep rally, the Bobcats wrapped up the day’s practice. Texas State will take Monday off and return to the field Tuesday afternoon.

Here are some newsworthy tidbits.

College Football: Game Week (Houston Edition)

Ready or not, college football is back. In six days, the Texas State Bobcats open the 2012 season at the University of Houston.

The Bobcats last met up with the Cougars back in 2010. It wasn’t a pretty game for Texas State, as it lost 68-28.

A lot has changed since then for both teams. Today we’ll look at the notable changes for Houston.
