Texas State needed junior quarterback Shaun Rutherford to prove himself to be a leader of the team.
Rutherford did just that Saturday night, pacing the Bobcats to a 35-26 win against Stephen F. Austin. The transfer from Blinn College accounted for 323 yards of total offense (241 passing, 82 rushing) and all of the team’s touchdowns (four passing, one rushing) in the victory.
Not only did Rutherford cement himself into a role as the starting quarterback, he helped Texas State continue its dominance of the Lumberjacks. The Bobcats now have won seven of their last eight games with SFA, including each of the last five.
Rutherford connected with a pair of fellow Blinn College transfers Isaiah Battle (50, 27) and Kyle Doll (23) on touchdown passes, then found Navarro College transfer Chase Harper for a 71-yard score. The quarterback ran in the final touchdown of the night from 22 yards out to ice the game with two minutes, 30 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
Texas State improved to .500 (2-2) and hosts Nicholls State next Saturday at 6 p.m.
