I can confirm junior transfer Shaun Rutherford will be the first quarterback on the field for Texas State this Saturday against Texas Tech.
Rutherford and sophomore quarterback Tyler Arndt jockeyed for position throughout fall camp, with neither having a clear-cut advantage. Arndt suffered a hamstring injury early in camp, however, allowing Rutherford to get extra reps with the first team in his absence.
When Rutherford drops back on the first offensive play from scrimmage for the Bobcats, it will be his first meaningful snap at quarterback since 2009. Rutherford spent the first three games of 2009 at quarterback as a member of the Blinn College Buccaneers. He then moved to wide receiver because Cam Newton, who later went on to win a Heisman Trophy and a National Championship with Auburn, joined the team.
Expect both Arndt and Rutherford to see snaps in the game with the Red Raiders.

Joined in on the Big 12 Coaches Teleconference this morning to speak with Texas Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville. Here is what he had to say in response to my questions…
On preparing for Texas State, despite having any true game film — “We’ve looked at film from A&M and Alabama, because of Dennis Franchione. You take the basics from what coaches have done, see if they carried over. Everybody makes changes. We’ve made changes. Every team is different. What you end up doing — and this is with every team — is looking at the personnel and defending the personnel.”
On what he knows about the Bobcats’ personnel — “We didn’t play them last year, so I’m not sure. You can usually watch guys if you’ve recruited against them, but we’ve only been here two years, so we didn’t recruit against anybody from Texas State.”
On if he is worried about a team like Texas State coming in fired up with a new coach and nothing to lose — “You can’t worry too much about that. What happens usually in any game is we’re going to go out and do everything we possibly can to win. We’re not going to hold anything back and Texas State won’t either. At the same time, we make it as simple as possible and I’m sure Franchione and his staff are doing the same. You let the players play and decide the game.”
